Speech therapy addresses motor speech disorders…
A motor speech disorder (dysarthria, apraxia) refers to difficulty with pronunciation due to poor muscle control of the face, lips, and/or tongue. Examples of motor speech disorders include dysarthria or apraxia of speech (AOS). Slurred speech, slow/fast speech rate, or decreased loudness may be some symptoms of dysarthria while symptoms of AOS may include inconsistent speech errors, discoordination of oral structures, and difficulty pronouncing longer words. Motor speech disorders may be the result of neurological conditions such as stroke or Parkinson’s Disease.
