Stuttering

Speech therapy addresses stuttering…

Stuttering, or a fluency disorder, refers to difficulty maintaining smooth, free-flowing speech.  Symptoms may include speech that is characterized by the excessive presence of:

  • Repetitions of single letters/syllables (b-b-but); words (What-what-what); phrases (How come, how come, how come…).

  • Prolongations where a letter is held (mmmaybe);

  • Blocks where sound is held and released abruptly (P!robably)

  • Interjections  (ummm, uh, like).

It is also possible that people with a fluency disorder may display physical tension in areas such as the face (eyes, lips, jaw) or throat during speech.
